Marsh's Musings

Always Surprises in this Business

I often say every day is like Christmas in the auction business. You just never know what "Presents" will arrive on the doorstep. Last week I received for auction one of the most amazing items in my 27 years of being in the business.

As many of you know I am a huge car racing fan.

It all started back in the mid 60s while living in Europe when my wonderful father took the family to the formula one race in Belgium at Spa-Francorchamps. I was hooked to say the least.

Imagine the look on my face when a gentleman walked into the store with a slightly battered helmet that at first glance looked like a Jockey"s helmet. When I turned it over there was the label

"G.P'.for Grand Prix. Les Leston Crash Helmet" made in England. A genuine Formula One crash Helmet Vintage Mid 1940s/early 1950s. Juan Manuel Fangio/Stirling Moss Era.

It sells this Sunday at our auction. A very rare "present" that somehow showed up in Canada. If only we knew who wore it!
